Did Obama's crew research and approve of the benediction given by the Rev. Joseph Lowery (race baiter)? Lowery is known for his inflammatory remarks over his career living off the works of MLK. He dropped this backhanded bomb on us today.
"Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen. Say Amen" (emphasis added)
Nice work Obama! At least some of the conservative commentators have been quick to pick up on it.
While I certainly appreciate the historic significance of this event and in no way have any ill feelings toward his supporters and their obvious excitement. I feel that they have gone so far over the top to the point that there's no way he can live up to the hype. Hopefully he will prove me wrong.
I'm not the only one to call this a coronation instead of an inauguration. But that's exactly how this event is being treated. I turned on the ESPN Sports Center at 6 p.m. and this is their lead story? And they had to justify it by telling us that Obama was a star high school basketball player in Hawaii (No doubt a hot bed for budding NBA wannabe's).
My kids informed me yesterday that they were watching the inauguration in school. So I asked them to ask their teacher if they stopped teaching 4 or 8 years ago to watch either of the Bush inaugurations. A legitimate question in my mind. The answer was no. This one is historic. OK I can live with that. But wasn't 2000 historic also? Bush winning by the closest margin in modern history?
Believe it or not but Obama has rather large shoes to fill following Bush. As well pointed out by William McGurn in yesterday's WSJ article. Bush defended our country from several planned attacks by Islamic terrorists. He drove Al Qaeda and the Taliban out of Afghanistan in months, not years. He drove Saddam and his henchmen out of Baghdad when many thought (again) that our soldiers would be subjected to chemical weapons (I think they hoped they would be) in a matter of months. And after declaring Iraq a failure Bush and his generals orchestrated success in Iraq. Yes, we lost lives but how many American civilians lives did he save in the process? Thousands or even tens of thousands at the hands of terrorists? Bush planted the seeds of democracy in two countries in a sea of Arab countries run by totalitarian regimes. The effects will last decades, perhaps a millennia or longer.
Obama and the Democrats will have 4 years to blame their inabilities whatever they may be on the previous administration. Just as the Republicans did for Bush for four years and longer. That's how the game works. But eventually the honeymoon will be over and Obama, Pelosi and Reid will be held accountable for their actions. Hopefully Barney Frank and Christopher Dodd will be held accountable for their parts in the banking fiasco they were instrumental in creating.
